P2 Performance Management

Students need a minimum of three years' relevant work based practical experience before becoming Chartered Management Accountants.

Practical experience requirements are the same for all sectors.

Experience may be drawn from any of the following three areas (but a minimum of 18 months must be gained within the core area):

Area 1 - basic experience
Area 2 - core experience
Area 3 - supplementary experience

Note: Some or all of the required experience may have been gained before registering as a student.

Record Your Practical Experience


You record your experience in a career profile, which includes:

  1. an assessment of practical experience/membership application form (PDF 811KB) signed by a proposer
      and seconder
  2. an employment summary (Word DOC 55KB)
  3. a detailed record of your experience
  4. a record of skills development (Word DOC 61KB)

When writing up your detailed record of experience, think about the following when describing relevant tasks:
  • who did you report to?
  • how did you actually approach the task?
  • how often did you do it?
  • why did it need to be done?
  • who was the end-user/customer?
  • what software/IT did you use?
  • how many people helped you or were you part of a team?
  • what was the outcome?

Academic and audit experience


CIMA academic, internal audit and external audit guidelines explain whether your experience in these areas can be used as part of your application.

Assessment and decisions

On receipt, your application will be checked for all required information.

Next, it will be sent to two CIMA fellows for assessment. They award associate membership if they believe you have gained the necessary knowledge.

They will explain their decision if they do not award membership, and let you know if additional information or experience is needed. If your application is deferred, you will not be required to pay the application fee again.

CIMA, UK acknowledge receipt of your application, and will write to you within six to eight weeks with the assessors' decision.

CIMA assessors are able to interpret and evaluate the breadth of work you have recorded. It is still worth applying even if you feel you lack practical experience in some areas.
